Supported Internships - James' Story

Enable logoJames - how one thing led to another…

Find out how a supported internship helped James to gain confidence and enabled him to move into paid employment.

"Facilitated by Enable, in 2016/17 I undertook a supported internship at Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery (SM&AG), alongside part-time studying - my duties included being an attendant in the various galleries, and a variety of odd jobs around the museum.

That led to volunteering there one day per week - duties as above but also occasionally helping with the installation and de-installation of special exhibitions. In addition, since Sep 2017, I have been volunteering one day per week at Shropshire Archives, entering various historical records onto the computer so that they are searchable on-line.

I have gained customer service skills and have grown more confident; at the Archives I have learnt to work methodically within a team, and have gained experience in using various computer systems.

As of October 2019, the Museums Service offered me a switch from volunteering at SM&AG on Wednesdays to volunteering at the Shropshire Museums Collections Centre in Ludlow, where I am now helping with the computer-based cataloguing of acquired items; I still volunteer one day per week at Shropshire Archives
All this experience stood me in good stead when I recently applied for an apprenticeship at the Schools Library Service; with Enable’s help I completed the application on-line and was invited to an interview (including test tasks), at which I was supported by my Enable adviser.

Although I wasn’t offered the apprenticeship, as a result of my application and interview, I was offered a different paid job at the Schools Library Service, helping out during busy times, which I started in December 2019, and who knows where it might lead? Ultimately my goal is to be financially self-sufficient, and able to live independently."
