Shropshire Council

Support for 5-16 year olds

All applications for travel assistance for September 2023 will need to be received by 30 June 2023 at the latest.

For nursery and post 16 students all students in these age groups need to apply annually for travel assistance.

Any applications received after 30 June 2023 will still be processed but transport may not be set up for the start of the academic year and parents / carers will need to make their own transport arrangements in the interim.

If you have any questions or queries, please email the Specialist Travel team.

For full details and how to apply please visit our travel and transport pages.

We have a statutory duty to provide travel assistance considered necessary to facilitate the child’s or young person’s attendance at school where those pupils are of compulsory school age (5-16).

For pupils aged 5-16 with a statement of SEN or an education, health and care plan (EHCP) or registered disability to qualify for travel assistance, the following must apply:

  • Ordinarily residing in the Shropshire Council authoritative area and of compulsory school age (5-16)
  • Registered at their nearest or catchment school or designated school
  • Can't reasonably be expected to walk to school because of associated health and safety issues relating to their individual special educational needs or disability

Travel assistance won't be considered if a parent carer selects a placement at a school (including special school) which isn't their nearest or catchment school, or designated as appropriate by us.

If your child is attending a mainstream school and you'd like to apply for a school bus pass for your child please visit our school transport webpage.
