Location
The park is located on the A458 Stourbridge Road, 2 kilometres east of Bridgnorth, next to the Stanmore Industrial Estate. Grid Ref: SO 743925. A map showing the location of the site is available via the Map showing parks and countryside sites link on this page.
Recreational Activities
There are plenty of easy level circular walks on the site with some hard surface tracks.
Stanmore Camp Countryside Site has 80 acres of woodland and meadow criss- crossed by flat level paths open to the public.
Stanmore has an excellent network of pathways, which are all on level ground. This makes the park an ideal terrain for pushchairs and wheelchairs alike. There is a picnic area near to the main free car park. Thanks to some Big Lottery funding, there have recently been three RADAR-operated kissing gates installed in the main pedestrian entrances to the park. These allow pedestrian access as normal but also enable larger wheelchairs and mobility scooters to access the park with the aid of a RADAR key. The car park and some of the main paths have been resurfaced to improve access around the site.
If you or your organisation would like to hold a public event on this site, please contact us via the details on this page.
History of the site
Between 1939 and 1963, Stanmore was an RAF camp where pilots did their basic training, providing accommodation for 3500 recruits and 800 staff. The only original building now remaining within the park is the boiler house chimney stack, which now forms part of the RAF memorial to those killed who were stationed at the camp.
Other buildings from the RAF base still remain and have been converted into industrial units outside of the country park.
The reclaimed derelict land was planted with thousands of trees which now provide a valuable woodland setting, with open grassy areas and developing scrub habitat. These provide an ideal habitat for small mammals, such as bank and field voles, rabbits and foxes. A variety of birds feed and nest in the country park, including tawny owls, sparrowhawks and green woodpeckers.
