Mid-year population estimates
Results from the 2010 mid-year population estimates show that there are 293,400 people living in Shropshire: 145,100 men and 148,300 women. The population density in Shropshire is 0.92 persons per hectare (ha), or 237.7 persons per square mile, compared to a national figure of 4.0 persons per ha, or 1,037.3 persons per square mile. The total area of Shropshire is 319,736 hectares, or 1,235 square miles.
Mid-year population estimates giving population by sex and age are published annually by the Office for National Statistics ((c) Crown Copyright 2011). These estimates cover the period between censuses, which are undertaken every 10 years.

Sub-national population projections
Results from the 2006-based sub-national population projections estimate that the population of Shropshire will grow by 17% or 48,800 people, from 289,300 at mid-2006 to 338,100 at mid-2031. The male population is projected to grow by 25,200 and the female population is projected to grow by 23,600.
Sub-national population projections giving population by sex and age are published every few years by the Office for National Statistics. These projections show what the population will be in 25 years if recent trends continue in births, deaths and migration.
