Balance of good health

The Food Standards Agency Eatwell Plate Picture

The 'eatwell plate' was developed by the Food Standards Agency to give you some ideas of what to eat to achieve a healthy diet.

Use the 'eatwell plate' to help you get the balance right. It shows you how much of what you eat should come from each food group. This includes everything you eat during the day, including snacks.

So try to eat:

  • Plenty of fruit and vegetables - 33 per cent (group 1)
  • Plenty of bread, rice, potatoes, pasta and other starchy foods - choose wholegrain varieties whenever you can - 33 per cent (group 2)
  • Some milk and dairy foods - 15 per cent (group 3)
  • Some meat, fish, eggs, beans and other non-dairy sources of protein - 12 per cent (group 4)
  • Just a small amount of foods and drinks high in fat and / or sugar - 8 per cent (group 5)

For further information on these food groups please see the links on this page.

The 'eatwell plate' provides information on the recommended amount of different foods you should eat. It aims to help people to understand and enjoy healthy eating.

You'll see that you can still eat the foods you enjoy the most, maybe just in smaller portions or less often.

Changing towards more fruit and vegetables, bread, breakfast cereals, potatoes, rice and pasta is what matters. Snacks as well as meals count towards a healthy balance.

Challenge

Ok, so you might be thinking "Boring!", but why not make it fun - set yourself a challenge and write down everything you eat and see if you can put it under the correct food group. You can see how well you're doing then.

For information on food labels and food allergies please see the links in the left hand navigation menu.
