The Exercise on Referral Scheme aims to help people with limiting physical or medical conditions improve their health through supported and structured exercise following a fitness assessment. The assessment ensures that the exercise programme is tailored to a person's individual needs and capabilities.
The scheme consists of a 12 week exercise block, which includes a half-hour fitness assessment, a 10 week exercise programme and a half-hour reassessment.
It can be delivered to people with a range of physical and mental health conditions such as:
- obesity
- muscular-skeletal disorder
- psychological disorders
- diabetes
- respiratory diseases
- joint replacement
- arthritis
- osteoporosis
- heart disease
- high/low blood pressure
- anxiety/depression
Where are the classes held?
Bridgnorth Sports and Leisure Centre
Mondays and Wednesdays: 9.15am to 10.15am.
Idsall Sports Centre, Shifnal
Mondays and Thursdays: 12.30pm to 1.30pm.
Lakelands Sports Centre, Ellesmere
Tuesdays: 1.30pm to 2.30pm.
Market Drayton Sports and Leisure Club
Wednesdays: 2pm to 3pm.
Market Drayton Swimming Centre
Wednesdays: 9.15am to 10.15am.
Much Wenlock Sports Centre
Tuesdays: 10.45am to 11.45am.
Thursdays: 2.10pm to 3.10pm.
Oswestry Leisure Centre
Monday to Friday: 9am to 3pm and 6pm to 10pm.
Saturday and Sunday: 9am to 11am.
Pontesbury Public Hall
Thursdays: 9.30am to 10.30am.
Quarry Swimming & Fitness Centre, Shrewsbury
Wednesdays: 9am to 10am.
Shrewsbury Sports Village
Mondays: 10.30am to 11.30am.
Whitchurch Body Tech Health Club
Wednesdays: 3.30pm to 4.30pm.
Whitchurch Swimming Centre
Fridays: 11am to 12pm.
Classes are led by an instructor and consist of either gym-based activities or low-level water workouts in a swimming pool.
About our instructors
Our instructors are qualified in exercise referral, which allows them to work with patients experiencing any of the conditions listed above. They also have a minimum of a Level 2 qualification in Anatomy and Physiology, and proven experience of working in the leisure sector.
How can I join the scheme?
You can be referred to an exercise scheme by your local GP, practice nurse or health professional.
You can remain on the scheme for 12 months without having to be re-referred after which you should consult with your GP or health professional as to whether there is a need to continue, or whether a more suitable option is available.
In order for you to continue, you must be referred again.
This is not a free scheme.
