What is a Household Recycling Centre (HRC)?
It’s a place where you can take excess household waste. Shropshire Council has five HRCs* at which you can recycle over 20 different types of waste, including paper, cans, glass, plastic bottles, soil and rubble, engine oil, scrap metal, tetra pak, clothing, shoes, batteries, cardboard, wood, electrical items and garden waste. There are also facilities for hazardous materials, small quantities of asbestos and non-recyclable waste.
Where are they?
The five household recycling centres are located at:
- Shrewsbury (Battlefield Enterprise Park).
- Oswestry (Mile Oak Industrial Estate).
- Bridgnorth (Barnsley Lane).
- Whitchurch (Waymills Civic Park).
- Craven Arms (Craven Arms Business Park, off Long Lane).
*There is also a smaller scale Amenity Skip and Recycling Centre at Coder Road, Ludlow. This facility is not a fully licensed HRC, so it cannot accept hazardous waste such as asbestos or electrical items. These materials must be taken to the nearest HRC (Craven Arms) instead.
Opening hours
From Monday 1 March 2010 to Sunday 31 October 2010 the five household recycling centres will open from 9am to 7pm every weekday, and 9am to 6pm on weekends and bank holidays.
* The Coder Road site in Ludlow is open from 12pm - 8pm, Tuesday to Friday, and from 8am to 1pm on Saturdays all year round. All sites close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.
Notes
HRCs are for the domestic council taxpayers to recycle or dispose of their household waste free of charge. They will not accept any waste from any business, or any waste – including household waste which has been carried for profit. It is illegal for commercial waste to be taken to HRCs. HRCs cannot accept large amounts of soil, rubble or other construction/demolition waste. We also strongly discourage the use of the sites for the disposal of mixed ‘black bag’ waste which has to be landfilled, the focus of the sites is recycling.
Entry permits
A permit may be needed if you wish to take your household waste to a HRC in a trailer or a commercial-type vehicle. Entry permits are also required at the Coder Road Amenity skip and recycling site. For more information and an application form, see below.
Shropshire Council reserve the right to refuse entry to large vehicles or trailers, or restrict their entry to specific times on the grounds of health and safety. Permits will not be issued to any vehicle over 5 m long, or commercial-type vehicles over 2.1 m high, Luton box vans, tipper vehicles, flatbed and pick up trucks, horse box vehicles, agricultural and similar large vehicles.
Asbestos and household hazardous waste
Facilities for small quantities of household asbestos are provided at HRCs. It is important that the necessary safety precautions are taken so before that before you visit you contact Shropshire Council in advance, during office hours, by calling 0345 678 9007. Asbestos from any buildings used for commercial purposes, either currently or previously, will not be accepted.
Special facilities are also provided at HRCs for the disposal of surplus hazardous materials such as domestic and garden chemicals, which should not be disposed of in general household waste. Please ensure that the contents of any containers are clearly marked and transport them carefully to avoid spillages. Please ask a site attendant where to put them at the site.
