Cameron's story

The following was written with help from Cameron’s teacher.

Hi, I’m Cameron and I love farming. I am in year 14 at college and will be leaving at the end of this year. When I finish college I am going to a day opportunities farm four days a week where I will be learning farming skills. I will also be doing voluntary work on another farm for one day a week. I have already been to visit both farms, and in my last term at school I'll be going to the day-opportunities farm one day a week so I can get used to it, and get to know the other people who are there. I am nervous about leaving school but excited about going to spend more time on the farm.

When I was younger my family and I had support from the Disabled Children’s Team so I could have short breaks away from home and go to activities with my friends. Before I was 18, a worker from the Preparing for Adulthood Team came to meet me and my family with my children’s team social worker so we could all get to know each other, and talk about how I would like things to be as I get older. When I got to 18, I wasn’t able to go to the same short breaks or activity groups anymore, so we found other places to go to. I went to visit to see if I liked them and now I’ve got used to them. I like being around other adults.
